The Merchant’s House
The House of silk merchant Thomas Bayly, was rebuilt following the Great Fire of Marlborough in 1653, which destroyed most of the buildings in the High Street. In the years 1653-1700, a fine timber and brick building was constructed, its interior brilliant with wall paintings, panelled and with a commanding oak staircase. A substantial amount of this fabric survives and hidden decoration is still being revealed. The Bayly family lifestyle is reflected in the spacious and elegant rooms. A reconstructed garden in the spirit of the 1660’s has just been completed and will complement the historic old house.
The Merchant’s House was purchased by Marlborough Town Council and leased, for a peppercorn rent, to the Merchant’s House Trust in 1991. The Trust recently launched an appeal to raise £400,000 to complete the next phase of the refurbishment of the House. The Merchant’s House and Garden are open for guided tours on Fridays and Saturdays from 11am-4pm between Easter and the end of September. At other times, by appointment.
